Green Energy Through Burning Wood and Biomass Pellets Our current sources of energy, for example oil and gas are referred to as non renewable sources of energy and definitely not green energy. Green energy refers to energy which is not connected to global warming and climate change. Therefore only fuels and sources of energy that are either carbon negative or carbon neutral. Fossil fuels such as oil and gas are carbon positive, which means that put more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere with their combustion. Green energy is usually referenced by solar and wind power, however biomass energy is also green energy. Biomass is already part of the carbon cycle, therefore as long as the biomass is replaced it is carbon neutral. |

Green Energy Through Burning Wood and Biomass Pellets However, this also means its important to keep a balance between the rate at which the biomass is used and how quickly it grows. This therefore means though potential oak is a fuel, it is not really a biomass fuel that should be used, as oak takes so long to grow back. Biomass materials which should be used for fuel and energy are materials which can be grown back quickly. For example straws and grasses are annual crops, or sometimes two crops a year can be harvested. This means we can grow these biomass materials at the same rate we consume them, hence the balance of carbon production and consumption is even. However, an important note is to make the process of using biomass truly carbon neutral, no biomass should be used in the production of biomass fuel. |

Green Energy Through Burning Wood and Biomass Pellets As well as growing the right biomass energy crops, the fuel needs to be processed before it can be used as a fuel. One of the best ways to do this is to dry and compress the biomass into fuel pellets using a pellet mill. Once in pellet form, the biomass can be burnt efficiently with little or no smoke. However, to take the best advantages of the fuel, its a good idea to use fuel pellets in automated combustion solutions such as wood pellet stoves and wood pellet boilers. Some of these combustion systems also use gasification technology, which is a two stage combustion process. Gasification reduces the amount of smoke and particulates produced during combustion, but also generates more heat from the fuel. Green energy is possible, can can actually produce a cheaper fuel. It's just about taking the necessary action to make it happen. |
