Janfire Wood Pellet Boiler Information and Possible Complications

Janfire are one of major brand leaders in Europe for wood pellet boilers, they also produce their own automated large pellet store systems, which makes it possible to have one delivery per year and the pellet boiler will just feed its self from the large fuel store. The Janfire wood pellet boiler does have a significant number of positives, in its well made components and quality materials. However the whole Janfire range does have a problem in its design which, will have an impact on the fuel flexibility of the Janfire pellet boiler.

The issue in the design comes mainly down to the design of the burn pot and burn chamber. There are various different designs of burn pot, and one of the earliest designs is that of the drop down burn pot. The Janfire wood pellet boiler range uses this principle in the design of their bolt on pellet burner. The issue with this design is how it deals with ash, or doesn't deal with ash for instance.

The Issues Of The Janfire Wood Pellet Boiler Drop Down Pellet Burner

The main issue of the drop down pellet burner is with how it deals with ash. The only form of ash removal on such a pellet burner is through the movement of air from the combustion fan. The problem is this type of ash removal is only suitable for one grade of fuel, the premium wood pellet. An example of the issue is as follows. Say that the fuel pellets produce a higher ash content, but to obtain the best combustion rate you want the fan speed to remain the same. This means that only a proportion of the ash generated, will be moved into the ash draw. Eventually this will lead to a build up of ash, which will cause the boiler to fail.

Another issue that this design of burn pot has no chance of been able to deal with is a possible clinker formation. A clinker is formed when the temperature of the fire exceeds the melting point of the ash. This then forms a stick clinker, which sets hard when it cools. A combustion fan even at its highest speed setting still has no chance of been able to move the solid clinker from the pot.

Why Is It Important To Be Able To Burn Other Fuel Pellets Than Premium

From the above information you maybe thinking, well as long as I only burn premium pellets those issues will not effect me. Well technically that's true, but the reality is very different. Firstly, not all premium pellets produce the exact ash content stated on the packaging consistently, and may produce on occasion an ash content which is beyond the capabilities of the Janfire wood pellet boiler. If this happens you may then be left with several tonnes of pellet fuel which you cannot burn! However, you also need to look at the long term cost and commitment of been only able to burn premium grade pellets. Premium pellets are by far the most expensive grade of pellet fuel, and will get even more expensive in the future. Been able to burn lower grade wood pellets and biomass pellets gives you the option to choose a cheaper form of pellet fuel.
