NEWS : NPS45 Wood Pellet Stove Facts and Performance Details

Napoleon Fireplaces produce the NPS45 wood pellet stove. The NPS45 is a fairly standard stove, with some unique features. The unit does feature an automated cleaning system. At start up, shut down and every 60 minutes during continuous use the stove goes through a purge cycle. During the purge cycle the stove dumps the ash build up of the burn pot into the ash draw. This is done through an increase in the combustion fan speed to blow the ash out of the burn pot and into the ash draw. However, there are complications using such a system, such as with clinker formations. Clinkers are where the combustion temperature of the fire exceeds the melting point of the ash, and the silicates within the ash bind together to form a glass like mass. However due to the clinkers increased density and weight compared to normal ash, a purge system is unable to remove the clinker into the ash draw resulting in a stove shut down.

What Other Features And Abilities Does The NPS45 Pellet Stove Have

The speed of the combustion fan can be adjusted to several settings to control the heating temperature to a comfortable level. The heat output of the stove can range from 8,000 up to 40,000 Btu's. It is possible with the NPS45 to adjust the feed rate of the pellets and the combustion fan speed. Having the ability to control these features is a must when buying any pellet heating system, and for good reason. Different makes, brands and grades of pellet fuel all burn slightly different, so you may need to make small adjustments to the feed rate and air speed to get the best out of the pellets. The stove has an in-built pellet hopper which holds 55lbs worth of fuel, this is standard and can keep the stove running for around 50 hours. The NPS45 features the FAILSAFE auto ignition system, which makes starting the fire quick and easy. The stove has received the necessary safety ratings to be used in homes as well as mobile homes. In general the NPS45 is a worthy consideration, depending on price of course.

Napoleon NPS45 Burn Pot Design And Possible Fuel Complications

As discussed earlier the ash removal system of the NPS45 is dependant on the combustion fan, and the possible complications this can cause with high ash fuels and fuel where the ash can melt. Ash clinker formations are usually associated with biomass pellet fuels such as grass and straw pellets, however they can also occur with wood pellets. The point is less presume you bought a new batch of wood pellets from a different source, a few tonnes or so and try them in the stove. If the ash content of these pellets is too high or the ash does melt and form clinker formations you could be looking at a big loss on fuel. Therefore buying stoves which are dependant on this type of ash removal is risky. However there are stoves which have a more positive means of removal.
