Wood Pellet Furnace Details and Pellet Stoves and Boilers

As a cheaper and greener alternative to oil and gas heating solutions, there are few better choices than a wood pellet furnace. Wood pellets are considerably cheaper than oil or gas on a per heat unit basis, and even though prices will track those of oil and gas as they increase, wood pellets can be made locally. Been able to produce fuel locally is a major advantage, from the point of view of reduced transportation and hence lower costs, but also from the fact that a large number of jobs can be created in producing local fuel pellets. So when it comes to burning fuel pellets, a basic log stove can be used, however to take full advantage of the qualities of the fuel, a wood pellet furnace is the best option.

When going to look for a wood pellet furnace, you really need to understand what sort of heat output you need to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. One of the first things to do before purchasing any new heating equipment, is to invest properly in making sure your home is as well insulated as possible. Once you know what sort of heat output you need, you then need to decide how you want that heat distributing, i.e. do you want only hot air, or do you want some for hot air and some for hot water. These types of decision are the first you need to make to narrow down your options. After that you can get more into the specifics of what type of fuels will you be interested in burning, and also what level of automation in fuel supply and cleaning do you need.

Though obviously every wood pellet furnace is designed to deal with pellet fuel, getting the fuel into the burn pot is only half of the requirement. Removing the ash may seem a simple requirement, however some wood pellet furnaces do struggle with this issue as they are only designed to remove 1% ash and no more. The fact is that only the most expensive pellet fuels produce up to 1% ash, and there are many other much cheaper fuel pellets which produce more than 1% ash that you would not even have the choice of using. Why do some pellet stove designs meet this minimal criteria, because it is cheaper to do so and currently premium pellet fuels dominate the market. However the future of pellet fuel is not with premium grades, its with other biomass fuel pellets.
